What one lesson actually looks like

Module 02, Lesson 3

"Naming the gap in under twenty seconds"

This lesson comes from the Reframing the Gap module. It's usually the third session someone takes, after an intake conversation and a short writing exercise. The goal is narrow: build one clean answer to "walk me through your resume" or "tell me about the gap" that takes less than twenty seconds to say out loud and doesn't sound rehearsed.

What's included

  • A short worksheet that separates "what happened" from "what I did"
  • Three example answers from different fields, none identical
  • A live practice round with immediate, specific feedback
  • A recording you can listen back to privately

A sample exchange

Interviewer: "I see about a three-year gap here. Can you walk me through that?"

Practiced answer: "I stepped back for three years to care for a family member. During that time I kept my project management certification current and volunteered coordinating logistics for a local nonprofit, which turned out to be a good stand-in for the coordination work I do professionally. I'm ready to bring that same structure back to a full-time role."

Notice what the answer does. It states the reason once, briefly, without over-justifying it. Then it moves immediately to something concrete that happened during the gap. That's the whole structure this lesson teaches, applied to your own situation.

What a typical session includes

Warm-up

A short check-in on what's felt hardest since deciding to return, so the session can meet you where you are.

Core exercise

The main worksheet or mock interview segment tied to that day's specific skill.

Practice round

Applying the exercise out loud, recorded if you'd like, with direct feedback rather than general encouragement.

Take-away

One specific thing to try before the next session, small enough to actually finish.
